chant reprise rant because some of you aren't listening
this is a more serious post so quickly before we begin I'm gonna put this out there:
i am openly queer
once i can vote I'm voting blue
fuck trump
no one is illegal on stolen land
love is love
fuck MAGA
kamala should've won
no guns
Now that we have that out the way, I'm going to be using actual grammar for this post because this topic is important to me.
chant (reprise) is a song about today's politics and no one can change my mind. I will quickly go through and explain my reasoning on that for every lyric that I can, so this is a longer post and I am not sorry whatsoever.
Low, keep your head, keep your head low, kkh
Oh, you gotta keep your head low, kkh
If you wanna keep your head, huh-kkh
Oh, you gotta keep your head low
Keep your head, keep your head low, kkh
Oh, you gotta keep your head low, kkh
If you wanna keep your head, huh-kkh
Why do we turn away when our brother is bleeding?
Why do we build the wall and then call it freedom?
I can't look in my brother's eye
(Keep your head—)" <- the media never reports on queer people being murdered every single day, our brothers are BLEEDING
ON THE STREETS because of this government, the "keep your head low" is people saying to not speak of it, "why do we build the wall then call it freedom" is self explanatory, blocking us off from other countries to "keep America free" is not freedom, argue with the wall, "If we're free, tell me why I can't look in my brother's eye" is about how if were free why can't we be kind to others all because of who they love or their skin color? What's wrong with being human?
This next part is gonna be significantly longer and I am sorry.
If I raise my voice—
[WORKERS]
[FATES, WORKERS]
Keep your head low
[EURYDICE]
[WORKERS]
If I raise my head
If I raise my head
[FATES, WORKERS]
Keep your head low
[EURYDICE]
[FATES, WORKERS]
(Oh, you gotta keep your head low)
[ORPHEUS]
Could I change the way it is?" <- if we raise our voices against the government, if we raise our heads and realize innocent people are dying and being beaten for existing and people are being hate crimed daily then we can change for a better, if we all protest and fight against the government then we can throw trump out of office, we need to stick together and go against them, we CAN make a difference.
we need 3.5% of America to protest and rise up against the government, that's 12million people, 8 million people went for no kings, we CAN DO IT. we need to speak out, share resources, protest MORE, if we all rally together then we CAN MAKE A CHANGE.
PLEASE do what you can for your neighbors, we are all human, why should we be hated for loving? for being a different skin color? for EXISTING? we need to fight back
If you can't protest for any reason then SHARE those protests, POST ABOUT IT, SPEAK. UP.
I am not sorry for this post, this topic means a lot to me as a queer and disabled person who was AFAB (trans), i shouldn't have to live in fear, shouldn't have to dream of going to my dream high school but being unable because I'm terrified it'll get shot up again BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN BEFORE. I shouldn't have to be in an online school out of FEAR. I AM A KID AND IM SCARED OF BEING KILLED FOR WANTING A FUCKING EDUCATION. WE NEED TO FIGHT BACK.
art is political, theatre is political, hadestown is political, to anyone saying "it needs to be modernized" or "it's not political!" HAVE WE WATCHED THE SAME FUCKING THING?? EURYDICE DIED OF NOT HAVING RESOURCES. SHE STARVED OR FROZE TO DEATH AND THATS NOT POLITICAL ?? HES BUILDING A WALL TO "HAVE FREEDOM" WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT THAT IS NOT POLITCAL ??
"[WORKERS]
Why do we turn away instead of standing with him?
Why are we digging our own graves for a living?
We can stand with our fellow man
(Keep your head—)" <- why do we turn our heads away from people fighting for their life? Why don't we stand up with them and help them? why are we digging our own graves by just living and going outside with pride of who we are? if we are "free" then why cant we protest without ice trying to kill or detain people? When can we stand with our neighbors and fight for them?
People always say "keep politics out of art" when what they really mean is "stop talking about things that make me uncomfortable." but hadestown was ALWAYS political. theatre has ALWAYS been political. Art has ALWAYS reflected the world people are forced to live in, im not overanalyzing chant (reprise) im just pointing out people saying this isn't a political musical is stupid and that we need to fight back already
